One day I saw an interesting piece of poplar at Home Depot. Most of the board was a dark brown, almost like walnut. I took it home without knowing exactly what I was looking at. This was my introduction to heartwood.

That board sat around for a while until I realized it would make a nice dog bowl holder.

I cringe a little at the miters, but it’s held up, and there have been no complaints from the dog.
